Zaid Al-Dabbagh (“I”, “me”) respects your privacy. This policy explains what personal information I collect through zaidaldabbagh.com, why I collect it, who I share it with and the choices you have. I handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.

Who I am

I’m Zaid Al-Dabbagh, I’m a Senior Product Engineer based in Melbourne, Australia, and this is my personal website. You can reach me through the contact page, or by email at [ zaid.aldabbagh@gmail.com ].

This policy covers my personal website, zaidaldabbagh.com.

What I collect, and how

Information you give me

The contact form: the details you enter — your name, email address and message.
Ask Zaid!: the questions you type into the site’s AI assistant.

Information collected automatically

Your approximate location: my hosting provider, Vercel, works out your approximate town from your IP address. I use it only to show your local time and weather. I don’t ask for your precise location, and I don’t store your IP address.
How the site performs: Vercel measures how quickly pages load, without cookies and without identifying you. I don’t use Google Analytics or any other analytics service.
Choices you make on the site: your browser remembers settings like light or dark mode, text size, contrast, narration and sound, so they stay as you left them, and briefly keeps your last search and today’s weather so they needn’t be fetched again. These stay in your browser, and I don’t collect them.

Why I collect it

To reply to your message, and to email you a copy of what you sent.
To answer your questions through Ask Zaid!.
To show your local time and weather on the site.
To understand how quickly the site loads, so I can make it better and more accessible.
To keep the website secure and prevent spam and misuse.

I don’t sell your personal information, and I don’t use it for advertising. If you’ve contacted me, I may follow up about your message; you can tell me at any time if you’d prefer I didn’t.

Cookies and similar technology

Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser. When you first visit this site, I ask which cookies you’re happy for me to use:

Necessary: these keep the site working and remember your choices, including your cookie choice. They’re always on.
Analytics: nothing on this site sets analytics cookies at present. If I add analytics in future, it will only run if you agree to it, and I’ll update this policy first.

I don’t use advertising or social media tracking cookies. You can change your choice at any time using the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page. Some embedded content, such as YouTube videos, is provided by those services under their own privacy policies; YouTube videos are embedded in its privacy-enhanced mode.

Ask Zaid!, the AI assistant

Ask Zaid! points you to the projects, posts, tutorials and pages on this site that fit what you’re after, using artificial intelligence provided by Anthropic. When you ask a question, the text of your question is sent to Anthropic to generate the answer.

I don’t keep a record of your questions or the answers. So that the assistant isn’t overused, the site’s server holds your IP address in its memory for up to an hour to count how many questions have been asked from it; it isn’t stored, and it isn’t sent to Anthropic. Please don’t include personal details in your questions.

Who I share it with

I share personal information only with the service providers who help me run this website, and only so they can provide that service:

Vercel: hosts the website and provides visitor location and speed measurement.
Sanity: stores and serves the website’s content, images and sounds. Some of it, such as testimonials and the sounds and pictures in the Today widget, is shared with the PANDAUX website and served from its Sanity project.
Resend: sends the emails generated when you submit the contact form, including the copy of your message sent to you.
Anthropic: provides the AI behind Ask Zaid!.
Open-Meteo: provides weather forecasts. I send it only an approximate location (to about 10 km), never your IP address.
Google: provides YouTube video embeds.

I may also disclose personal information if the law requires it, or to protect my rights or the public.

Information sent overseas

Some of these providers store or process information outside Australia, including in the United States and Europe. When I use overseas providers, I take reasonable steps to make sure they handle personal information in a way that is consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles.

How I protect it

I use reputable providers, encrypted connections (HTTPS) and access controls to protect personal information from misuse, loss and unauthorised access. No method of sending or storing information online is completely secure, but I work to keep the information I hold safe.

How long I keep it

I keep personal information only for as long as I need it for the purposes above, or as long as the law requires. When I no longer need it, I delete it or remove anything that could identify you.

Your choices and rights

Access: you can ask for a copy of the personal information I hold about you.
Correction: you can ask me to correct information that is wrong, out of date or incomplete.
Deletion: you can ask me to delete your information, for example a message you sent through the contact form.
Cookies: you can change your cookie choice at any time from Cookie settings.

To make a request, get in touch through the contact page or email [ zaid.aldabbagh@gmail.com ]. I’ll respond within 30 days. I may need to confirm your identity first.

Complaints

If you have a concern about how I’ve handled your personal information, please contact me first through the contact page or at [ zaid.aldabbagh@gmail.com ], and I’ll do my best to resolve it. If you’re not satisfied with my response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner on 1300 363 992.

Changes to this policy

I may update this policy from time to time. I’ll post the new version on this page and change the date at the top.
